A quick guide to booking driving lessons
What your first lesson involves, how instructors are qualified, and how to plan the run-up to your test.
Before your first lesson
You'll need a provisional driving licence before you can take a lesson on the road, and your instructor will want to see it at the start. It's also worth checking your eyesight meets the required standard — you must be able to read a number plate from 20 metres, which is tested at the start of the practical test.
Manual or automatic
A licence gained in an automatic only allows you to drive automatics; passing in a manual lets you drive both. Automatics remove gear changes and clutch control, which some learners find gets them on the road faster. Instructors usually teach in one or the other, so filter for what you want before booking.
ADI and PDI instructors
A fully qualified instructor is an Approved Driving Instructor and displays a green badge in the windscreen. A trainee instructor still working towards full qualification displays a pink badge. Both can legally charge for lessons; it is simply worth knowing which you are booking, and instructors will tell you if you ask.
Weekly lessons vs intensive courses
Most learners take a regular weekly or twice-weekly lesson over several months, which gives time to absorb things between sessions. Intensive courses compress everything into days or weeks and suit people with a deadline — but they need you to be available in long blocks, and test availability has to line up.
Lesson length
Two-hour lessons are common because you spend less proportional time getting to and from practice areas. One hour can work well early on when concentration is the limit. Many instructors offer discounted blocks of lessons paid for up front.
Getting ready for the test
You need to pass the theory test before you can book the practical. Closer to the test, instructors often run mock tests under realistic conditions to show where you stand. If you do not have your own suitable car, ask early whether your instructor offers use of theirs on test day, as it is usually booked in advance.
