Good to know

A quick guide to booking a solicitor

What an initial consultation covers, how legal work is usually charged, and what to bring.

The initial consultation

Most practices offer an initial consultation to understand your situation and tell you whether they can help, roughly what's involved and what it's likely to cost. Some offer this free or at a fixed rate; others charge their standard rate. Check which before booking so there are no surprises.

How legal work is charged

Fixed fees are common for defined pieces of work such as conveyancing, a will, or a straightforward application. Hourly rates are more usual where the amount of work is hard to predict. Some personal injury work is handled on a conditional fee — often called no win, no fee — arrangement. Ask for the basis of charging in writing before instructing anyone.

What to bring

Photo ID and proof of address are almost always required, as firms have legal obligations to verify identity. Beyond that, bring anything relevant to your matter: correspondence, contracts, court papers, or a written timeline of what has happened. A clear summary saves chargeable time.

Conveyancing

Property work runs to the pace of the wider chain, so timescales are rarely in one firm's hands alone. Quotes usually separate the firm's own fee from disbursements — searches, Land Registry fees and Stamp Duty, which are costs paid out on your behalf. Make sure any quote you compare includes both.

Family matters

Family cases are often emotionally difficult as well as legally complex, and many practices will talk to you about mediation or other routes alongside court. If children or finances are involved, a first consultation is usually about mapping the options rather than committing to a course of action.

Checking regulation

Solicitors in England and Wales are regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority, and you can check whether a firm or individual is regulated on the SRA's public register. Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own regulators. It's a reasonable thing to verify for yourself before instructing anyone.
